Singer-songwriter and DJ Alice Glass proves she still has a pulse on her corner of electronic music with her new single, “CATCH AND RELEASE.” As the first piece of new material since last year’s CLIP collaboration “REMAINS,” the former Crystal Castles frontwoman is still coming up with new ways to spin the experimental sound she pioneered when she first came onto the scene.
“‘CATCH AND RELEASE’ feels like the sharp panic of falling under ice — that trapped, choking anxiety disguised as something nice,” said Glass. “The only way out is to move, bounce, dance through it before it seeps in and eats you alive.”
From the get-go, the song’s abrasive alarm-like synths boom into your ears and waste no time in getting matters started, rolling out the red carpet for Glass to sing her heart out through reverb and glitchy effects. However, behind the wall of blaring electronic production is a call from the void that captures uncomfortability in its rawest form.
While “CATCH AND RELEASE” comes in at a little over two minutes, none of the runtime feels wasted. Whether it’s the vocals reminiscent of screamo or the synths that electrify the track like an exploding transformer, there’s no denying the intensity Glass brings to the table.
And considering it’s been two years since Glass’s last solo album, PREY//IV, the possibility of a new project on the horizon is something to get excited about if “CATCH AND RELEASE” is any indication.
Alice Glass will perform at Red Rocks with Sudden Death and VOYD on Nov. 13 and 14. Visit Alice Glass on Instagram and her TikTok to stay updated on new releases and tour dates.
