After a string of singles released throughout the first half of 2025, psych-rock outfit The Undercover Dream Lovers have unveiled the final part of their winning run, “cookin in the sun,” taken from the EP of the same name. Produced and co-written by Matt Koenig, the mind behind the solo project, the EP comes as the first major release for Koenig since 2023’s Time Lapsed.
With “cookin in the sun,” the blaring siren sound separates the title track from the rest of the tracklist off the EP, doubling as what could be a new start for The Undercover Dream Lovers. From there, the fusion between electronica and alt-rock is made natural under Koenig’s control, whose vocals are especially fitting for the sun-soaked single.
At the same time, his continuation of genres that dominated the indie scene in the aughts is a significant reason why tracks like “cookin in the sun” work so well. Although his sound harkens to a nostalgic time, it’s not so far removed from the current state of music to alienate listeners.
Fittingly, the title track is the sort of song that was made for summertime, given the radio-friendly melodies and excited energy that never wanes across the runtime. It also stands as further proof that there are lots of sonic textures for Koenig to explore, putting him in a great position whenever his next full-length album arrives.
