2025 was already a big year for rock band Girl Tones, but they’re proving that they have more to offer with the release of their latest single, “Leave the City.” The song arrives ahead of several shows going into the new year, including an LA show at the Troubadour on Feb. 7.
But it wasn’t long ago when Girl Tones was formed by sisters Kenzie and Laila. Like influences such as The White Stripes, the two realized early on they worked best as a duo. Given the fact that they both had classical training, the transition from cellos and pianos to guitars and drums was made easier by their shared experience.
Any potential roadblocks the duo may have faced getting their start are nowhere to be heard by the sound of “Fade Away,” their debut single from 2024. The fuzzy, bluesy inflections in the instruments are apparent from the start, setting a strong introduction for them to come in roaring. Their simplistic sound also made it clear they understood what it took to bring the heat and get lyrics stuck in your head.
In many ways, “Leave the City” follows that trend while also serving as a personal statement for the band, who’ve spent their year keeping busy with festival appearances and touring with Cage the Elephant. Brad Shultz, guitarist and founding member of Cage the Elephant, happens to be a frequent collaborator with the two, having produced their songs, including “Leave the City.”

While “Fade Away” turned up the volume with the sort of energy made for live settings, the melodies at the core of “Leave the City” are more suitable for your car radios. The two manage to keep their volume high and adopt a slower pace, their rock-and-roll edge intact through the pop sensibilities put on display.
Throughout the runtime, they prove how they’ve managed to garner a sizable following in a short amount of time since debuting. Like previous releases, the song also shows they’re consistent in delivering their promise of tried and true rock music that manages to cross over from devoted followers of the sound.
And considering they have a slew of other shows in early 2026, it’s safe to say the sisters are aiming for an even bigger year than what they saw in 2025.
