Lana Del Rey has returned with “White Feather Hawk Tail Deer Hunter,” a cryptic, slightly creepy, undeniably enchanting new single that feels like a left turn into darker, more experimental territory. It’s whimsical, theatrical, and steeped in the kind of off-kilter mysticism that rewards repeat listens.

The track was a family affair. Lana co-wrote the song with her sister Chuck Grant, her brother-in-law Jason Pickens, and her husband Jeremy Dufrene. She also produced the single alongside longtime collaborator Jack Antonoff, with additional co-production and sweeping orchestration from Drew Erickson. The result is lush and cinematic, balancing eerie minimalism with ornate, almost storybook-like instrumentation.

When Lana first teased the song on Instagram, the whispery, spoken-word delivery and experimental textures initially evoked artists like Sofia Isella and Ethel Cain. The hushed vocals and unconventional structure felt adjacent to their shadowy alt-pop sensibilities. But as the full track unfolds, it’s unmistakably Lana — the same artist who once gave us “Diet Mountain Dew” and “Cinnamon Girl” now channeling that playful edge into something far stranger.

Lyrically, the song balances macabre romance with tongue-in-cheek humor. Lines like:

“In the dark (snap), snap, crackle, pop, tch / We’re a match, he’s just in my bone marrow”

are absurd, a little campy, and completely in character. It’s a reminder that beneath the melancholic glamour, Lana has always had a sly, almost mischievous wit.

Sonically, “White Feather Hawk Tail Deer Hunter” plays like a gothic fairytale. The eerie keys in the intro echo the minimalist dread of John Carpenter’s “Halloween Theme,” instantly setting a suspenseful tone. But the track doesn’t stay in horror mode. Its shimmering strings and delicate woodwinds drift into something more fantastical, reminiscent of “Aquarium” from The Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saëns — whimsical, magical, and slightly surreal.

Over it all, Lana’s voice remains the anchor. She delivers the song with an almost incantatory cadence, as if she’s casting a spell that tightens with each chorus. The performance feels playful yet deliberate, theatrical without tipping into parody.

In an Instagram Reel, Lana shared she loves that the song’s release was “on the day of the solar eclipse.” Lana also mentions “the new year of the fire horse” and how she’s so into “the shedding of the skin of the snake.”

“I think it’s really that everybody just wants a fresh start,” said Lana. “I see so much of it. And me too.”

For listeners who gravitate toward alt-pop’s more experimental and witchy corners, this may be one of her most satisfying releases yet. It’s different from her signature smoky Americana ballads — but that’s precisely what makes it compelling.

The song arrives with a homemade video made by Lana, her husband, and friends. In an Instagram Story, Lana shared details about the video and song.

“Hi there, video coming out just wanted to say thank you, Conner and Dillon and Anna and Jeremy for filming us, I couldnt stop laughing. Grateful that Jack and Laura came out here and helped me finish this up, and for my sister for rooting me on every time I used to chant this song for fun. And for JASON constantly trying to find me the second part of the verse, Jeremy for always dancing when I would pull his little hawk tail hair and say it was getting so long. Drew, you nailed it throughout the top and middle of these songs, lining them with a little Glen Campbell and Disney. The craftsmanship is unmatched
Laura, Dean and Michael and everyone else who helped edit this song and all these songs, you are the true sculptors in all these little jeweled bracelets we put out. Of course, not to mention everybody else we worked with on this album, including Zach Dawz the Secret Sisters, Laci and oh my goodness Luke Robert, but I’ll have to save all that for another time.”

And with a new album expected in about three months, “White Feather Hawk Tail Deer Hunter” sets the tone for what could be one of her most sonically adventurous eras to date.
