It’s one thing to make a great song. But layering it with hidden meaning, atmospheres, and personal narratives is further proof that only the three artists featured this week could put the material together. It’s also this contrast that is just one of many signs pointing to these artists’ complexity.

The Avalanches & Portraits of Tracy “Can’t Get Over Losing You”

Legendary electronic group The Avalanches is feeling nostalgic for bygone eras and expressing grief with their new energetic Portraits of Tracy collaboration, “Can’t Get Over Losing You,” off of No Bad Memories out Oct. 16.

The Australian trio debuted with the genre-defining Since I Left You in 2000 before becoming a collaborator’s powerhouse in later releases. Nowadays, they’ve made features a centerpiece of their music, with other artists broadening their sound like a colorful splatter painting.

“Tracy is a hilarious, brave and tender human being who Tony and I have become very close to over the years we’ve been making music together…truly a generational talent! We feel very fortunate to make music together,” said Robbie Chater, one-third of the group.

“Can’t Get Over Losing You” features the familiar sampling techniques of The Avalanches, but brings in Tracy’s hyper eclectic brand of pop music. True to her evolution over the past few years, her dynamic vocals coincide with the thumping drums and sugary production that breathe new life into what sounds to be an old soul sample used as a refrain.

For a group spanning decades, The Avalanches’ willingness to work with emerging talent is a stellar sign for how No Bad Memories is shaping out.

Danielle Ponder “Sun & Moon”

Fittingly for the song’s title, singer-songwriter Danielle Ponder is looking at the light and darkness of a relationship on her newest single, “Sun & Moon,” off of her sophomore album, Everything Has Changed, out Oct. 9 via Dead Oceans.

While a first listen may not immediately call to mind the song’s deeper core, Ponder uses the lyrics to speak about how the initial excitement of pursuing someone quickly dies out over time, all while the production is a seamless blend of genres like soul, R&B, and pop.

Compared to the previously released “Power,” which spoke to the broader, more universal themes of Everything Has Changed, “Sun & Moon” is a personal reflection that’s still made prescient by Ponder’s ability to sing as though those emotional truths were drawn from your own experiences.

Whether it’s the bouncy drums or the vocal delivery that screams “I’m fed up,” she brings every element of the song together while singing hard-hitting lines like “You ain’t no catcher, you just want to chase me” and “When I’m leavin’, that’s when he sees my light.”

If Everything Has Changed is meant to be taken literally, then the changes occurring in Ponder herself are her growth as an artist.

Death Valley Girls “Message From the Venus Flower”

While no strangers to catharsis – what with their rapturous rock – LA’s Death Valley Girls are finding ways to cope with the aftermath of 2025’s wildfires on their upcoming album, Welcome to Earth, out Oct. 9 via Suicide Squeeze Records, a goal punctuated by the lead single, “Message From the Venus Flower.”

On the new song, they’ve taken things up a notch with a life-affirming funk anthem for lead singer Bonnie Bloomgarden’s late dog (Tommy), who died shortly after her home was left unlivable after the Eaton Fire destroyed Altadena.

“Tommy tried to tell me that her body didn’t matter, our connection was eternal,” said Bloomgarden. “Because we were eternal souls that reincarnate and meet up in many lifetimes, and moreover, we are always connected and together.”

“Messsage From the Venus Flower” buzzes with the same level of intensity that other singles have, but repurposes it in a way that’s more fitting for a celebration of life rather than a takedown. “You are perfect,” “You have come so far,” and other positive lines speak to this mindset, all while the rest of the band play together like a hivemind.

Considering the track’s background and the rest of the album, it says a lot about Death Valley Girls’ talent and evolution in the way they’ve taken a tumultuous year and turned it into a newfound drive for their latest releases.
