Toro y Moi shares a calculated switch-up in his sound with “Tuesday,” the lead single of his forthcoming album Hole Erth, dropping on September 6th on Dead Oceans. The 13-track collection will also rely on a notably eclectic group of artists like Benjamin Gibbard, Don Toliver, Porches, and Kevin Abstract to inform its heady melancholia. A headlining tour will also kick off at the end of summer ahead of the record’s release with a stop at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles on September 20th.

“Tuesday” melds together Toro y Moi mastermind Chaz Bear’s nostalgia for pop-punk anthemics and gloomily upbeat rap-rock into a reminiscence of suburban nostalgia. One that evokes all the sonic bliss and emotive angst of the music that soundtracks adolescence. “We’re both humming along / To some modern love song from mainstream radio,” he drones over a prismatic melody of off-kilter analog and digital textures. “Our inner monologues both locked in / Singing about some celebrity break-up.”

With yearning potency, he strikes a chord of youthful anxiety due to the cyclical trappings of life: “Give me some complexity / Unpredictability / Changing subjects rapidly / Repetition gets to me.” Flooded by the rumbling kineticism of its clamoring drum machines and grumbling riff distortions, Toro y Moi carries you through a dreamily bittersweet glimpse back to a time when being frustrated and misunderstood was a distinct feature of everyday life.

The music video for “Tuesday,” directed by India Sleem, follows Toro y Moi across Berkeley, Oakland, and San Francisco while he wanders through his old stomping grounds. As he scarfs down a hot dog, the film flashes between moments of solo meanderings through each city and a night of revelry with friends, lending a joyous, wistful energy to memories perhaps shaded by the discontent of being a teenager.

Hole Erth arrives on September 6th on Dead Oceans. You can see Toro y Moi at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles on September 20th.
