Who’s Performing?
Arrive at The Ford early to see Los Caramelos, who will open the night’s festivities with their take on bolero moderno. Evoking the heartwrenching harmonies of Mexican trios like Los Tres Ases and Los Tres Caballeros, the three core singers—Dominick Maldonado, Matthew Jacquez, and Miguel A. Balán—recruited percussionist Larry M. Harvey II not long after they established the band last year.
Afterward, José Feliciano will take the stage, bringing his decades-spanning catalog of original hits, covers, and homages to the legacy of bolero music. Thirty years after he began his meteoric rise, he returned to the genre that had made him an international phenomenon with Señor Bolero (1997), a collection that affirmed the timelessness of not just Feliciano but the very traditions that live within his songs.
What is Boleros De Noche?
Boleros De Noche is a local independent production company dedicated to sharing, supporting, and preserving the bolero sounds of Los Angeles. Since 2021, they’ve held the annual concert series at The Ford, drawing thousands of Angelenos of all ages to celebrate the music and multigenerational roots that have kept this tradition alive. In the past, they’ve hosted Gaby Moreno, La Marisoul & Love Notes Orchestra, Los Tres Reyes, and more. But their impact isn’t just restricted to the stage—they also managed to successfully lobby the City of Los Angeles to recognize August 5th as “Día Del Bolero.”
Spend an evening with a Puerto Rican Legend
José Feliciano is a renowned singer and guitarist whose story is as remarkable as his talents as a musician. From a very young age, there were two constants in his life: the blindness he was born with and his innate affinity for music. From adolescence into adulthood he made immense strides before he was finally discovered—signing to RCA after an executive happened to see him perform. There, he made the fateful decision to record a series of old boleros that have made him one of the genre’s greats.
Before he hit thirty he’d been nominated and won several Grammy Awards, had recorded in four different languages, was internationally acclaimed, and had hits that included everything from the iconic holiday carol “Feliz Navidad” to a stunning cover of “Light My Fire” by the Doors. His skill with an acoustic guitar is legendary, plucking not just boleros from its strings but jazz and rock tunes as well.
A serenade by a Boyle Heights-born band carrying on the bolero tradition
This is what Boleros De Noche is all about: acknowledging the past while sustaining the future. There are so many bands that call the Southland home that are kindling the flames of Latin music traditions—Los Caramelos are without a doubt one of those groups. They may be relatively new on the scene, but their ability to enamor crowds has been tried and tested at the many intimate venues they’ve performed at across Los Angeles. We expect their Ford debut to be a truly special early (but by no means final) highlight of their career.
