When you take two artists who define the genres they’re most associated with, you get “Catching feelings,” the newest single from Christine and the Queens and disco producer Cerrone. The duo, who first made waves last year when they performed at the Paris Olympic Games, decided to join forces once again, taking their collaboration from the performance stage to the recording studio.
What followed was a 4-track EP, with “Catching feelings” setting the bar high for the rest of the EP thanks to slick disco production and a chorus bound to get stuck in your head. Rahim Redcar, the primary artist behind Christine and the Queens, unsurprisingly brings rockstar confidence in the way he sings to an unnamed partner, promising he’ll be the man to swoop them off their feet.
Aside from the aforementioned chorus – which plainly states “Don’t be afraid of catching feelings for me” in an infectious manner – lyrics like “Too many dickheads messed up your plans” and “We’re face to face and I’m not a threat” get boosted by guitar riffs and glitzy synths. As the track progresses, the synergy between Redcar and Cerrone somehow gets stronger, where the vocals become more dynamic and the instruments get stretched beyond their relatively stripped-back simplicity.
That evolution on “Catching feelings” speaks to how well Redcar and Cerrone work together while doubling as an early indication of the quality the two uphold in their upcoming EP.
