As they get ready for the release of their upcoming album, Existence Is Bliss, out Feb. 27, DEADLETTER is building up anticipation with their new single, “It Comes Creeping.”
Ahead of their second album, the English group felt it was time to incorporate more sounds into their already fiery banquet of a band. In case there was any doubt about how different the six-piece would sound, “It Comes Creeping” puts that to rest with free-flowing production but familiar energy.
“A spectre haunts us all,” said lead singer Zac Lawrence on the song. “Your spectre may well be different from mine, from your mother’s, but we all feel the wrath of whatever shape this spectre takes in the same way. The message in this track is not about what which comes creeping, but the way in which it does so.”
While the band is no stranger to chaos brought about by their signature brand of post-punk, the song starts on an already frantic note. The nebulous cloud of instruments crashing into each other eventually comes to a calm, with the rest of “It Comes Creeping” launching into their usual speed.
At the same time, the blaring horns and methodical drums set up a brooding tone, where the sense of impending doom is felt in all of the band members’ instruments. In the spirit of the inspiration behind “It Comes Creeping,” DEADLETTER doesn’t let the track explode but instead embraces the feeling of a larger threat coming, likely as a lead-up to the next song in the tracklist.
With the album about a month away, “It Comes Creeping” does more than enough to hold you off until the full project arrives.
