Los Angeles is a city of stars and legends, and we are lucky to check out a lot of them. This past Wednesday, Dec. 5 — jazz, R&B and blues guitar legend (and more), Shuggie Otis graced us with his presence at The Echoplex. This sold-out show had a heavy line of people hopeful to get last-minute tickets (not a chance) or just waiting for their turn to get in. Once in, show-goers were able to feel the vibes of Funky Sole DJs as well as a brief Dam Funk set that got the crowd pumped for some soulful jams. Proceeding the funky greatness that was Dam Funk, the stage was lit with the presence of a six-piece ensemble backing up Otis.  The music was great — the skills, the mastery and his charisma — however,  the sound took a hard hit on Shuggie’s performance.

As any amazing professional musician knowing their trade, the show must go on and it did; areaching the expected peak of greatness until almost the end. In the meantime, our ears patiently waited and stood the high pitch of the dying amplifiers dazzled by the illness of his guitar. It was painful and saddening to see a nervous Otis, repeatedly with his back turned to the crowd as he engaged in making his tower of amps protrude his glorious sound. From claims of being “sabotaged” to pleading for house amps because someone had supposedly busted his amps, Otis weathered through the storm even as the Echoplex started to clear out. In the end, Otis saved his performance with the helping-hand of the Echoplex’s house amps. Fans quickly rejoiced, smiled and grooved along to the masterful guitar skills and stunning croons of Shuggie Otis. It was a happy ending for those that remained hopeful and positioned at the Echoplex.
