Best Coast

Jangle-pop sweethearts Best Coast might still be riding the high from the release of last year’s California Nights, but Bethany Cosentino and Bob Bruno have been anything but inactive in the interim since. After a pretty short break, the duo are slated to head back on the road with their friends Wavves for a co-headlining tour, as well as a 7-inch split treat from the latter’s label Ghost Ramp.

Featured on its January release are the moody intonations of Cosentino’s signature crestfallen croons, as well as the fuzzily introspective guitar reverb that dominated much of their last album. Through the haze of Bruno’s warbled bass, Cosentino’s flat vocalizations float aimlessly, as the echoed reverberations of guitars faintly rumble in the background of every, “I think I’m dumb.”

The entire cover has a strangely deja-vu feel to it, and you can’t help but think, duh, who better to highlight the emotionally charged drowsiness of one of Nirvana’s most beloved tracks? Best Coast’s own sly beauty lies in the way the duo have managed to transform casual, and at first glance unremarkable lyricisms, into brutal confessions of depression and angst–so it really only made sense.

Do your ears a favor and your soul a solid by having a listen to the strangely surreal cover below.

Catch Best Coast live on their up coming co-headlining tour with WAVVES! The band has a Los Angeles date at the Fonda Theatre on March 3, with other Southern California dates in Anaheim and San Diego.
