Holy Wars

Darkly intimate in the most honest and macabre of ways, Holy Wars have released their first single of the year in the form of “Born Dark.” Coming off last year’s Mother Father, a dedicated piece to singer Kat Leon’s late parents, the inherent pain and tragedy of personal experience bleed through on their latest release, but an ownership over them occurs as well. A certain liberation crashes through in the midst of all the tribal drums and electric guitar duels that shape the song, with Leon taking her devilish melancholia by the reigns and letting it pour unapologetically out of her. A song about birth and rebirth, “Born Dark” sees Leon digging deep in an introspective look at her own inner-workings and attempts to reconcile herself with the world around her. Sonically, the song is a powerhouse of concussive intensity, all of which flows from Leon’s raw howls and a feral percussiveness. There’s an affirmation, a fire, that burns through the track signaling something of a rejuvenation for Holy Wars; Leon might still be picking up the pieces that life’s misery has left her with, but her newfound fearlessness is invigorating enough to keep moving.

As long as I have been writing poetry, I have always been inspired by pain as there is such a beautiful romance in a heart break,” Leon said of the single. “I have always been attracted to the dark in my creativity, maybe in some part due to growing up in a household of my mother being a Tarot reader. This song gives me a feeling of dancing in the dark, turning the lights off and just moving to the music where no one is watching and it is just you and your soul.”[/perfectpullquote]
