Earlier this year, Death Valley Girls released ”When I’m Free” as part of a two-sided, 7-inch vinyl mash up with Le Butcherettes. Now, they’ve come back to their single, expanding on its theme of liberation and self-identity by placing it in the crafty and boundary pushing hands of multi-disciplinary artist Peaches, who has turned the song into a club worthy remix.

Originally a sharp, psychedelic chant to express feelings of being disencumbered from the veil of society’s expectations, ”When I’m Free” is transformed into a minimal, electro-fused club banger suitable for getting lost on the dance floor. Atmospheric, novel and with plenty of looping beats and synth-soaked melodies, the single is taken from its 60s inspired instrumentation to a more modern, avant-garde style.

Still relying on the captivating and steadfast vocals of Death Valley Girls’ Bonnie Bloomgarden, Peaches builds off the single’s sentiments of empowerment but with a new, hypnotic twist. Whereas before, the single swayed and moved to an enchanting melody, it now gyrates and pulsates to a wavelength of insatiable energy. Freedom and self-expression remain at its core as Peaches’ remix merely shows us an alternative way to channel this blessed energy from within.

Both Death Valley Girls and Peaches have tour dates this spring and summer. Death Valley Girls kick off their tour close to home with a show in San Pedro at The Sardine on May 13, ending their tour mid-July with dates in San Francisco at The Chapel (July 15), Santa Cruz’s Crepe Place (July 16) and in Cayucos at Schooners (July 17).

Peaches, on the other hand, starts her Teaches of Peaches Anniversary tour in the Pacific Northwest, making her way down the coast for the following California dates: May 20 in San Francisco at The Masonic; May 21 in Pasadena performing for the Just Like Heaven Festival; and May 22 in San Diego at The Observatory North Park.
