Ozomatli will be the main act at at the First Annual ‘Live at The Music Center’ Concert with the opening set by Peanut Butter Wolf. The concert will happen over Labor Day weekend on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 8pm.
Ozomatli’s music is as diverse as the people who play in it and the music they love. The original band made up of young political activists and musicians, got together in Los Angeles in 1995. They played a mix of Hip Hop, Salsa, Dancehall, Cumbia, Samba, Funk, Merengue, Comparsa, East L.A. R&B, New Orleans second line, and Jamaican ragga, and Indian raga. Their motto was: “Ozomatli will take you around the world by taking you around Los Angeles.” Ozo’s music has been widely recognized and celebrated, and always sparks a good time.
Ozomatli have won three Grammy® Awards, including for Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album and Best Alternative Music Album, and the City of Los Angeles has named April 23 “Ozomatli Day” to honor the band’s large contribution to the city’s cultural life over more than 25 years. The band has six members: Wil-Dog Abers, Ulises Bella, Raul Pacheco, Justin Poree, Asdru Sierra, and Jiro Yamaguchi — not mention variety of special guests! Their new album Marching On was just released on Blue Élan Records.
“We are thrilled to have Ozomatli perform a free concert on Jerry Moss Plaza at The Music Center for all Angelenos to enjoy—what a fantastic way to kick off Live at the Music Center with one of L.A.’s homegrown bands. We have been able to provide this free event thanks to a major gift from Tina and Jerry Moss & the Moss Foundation. Their deep love and appreciation for music will reverberate in the many free and low-cost events we produce year-round. So, mark your calendars for September 3 and get ready to rock the night away under the stars!” -said Rachel S. Moore, president, and CEO of The Music Center
The special night will start with a 40-minute audio/visual set by L.A.’s Peanut Butter Wolf, who is the head of the Stones Throw label. Peanut Butter Wolf got his start by spinning and playing Hip-Hop beats. He helped Madlib, J Dilla, Quasimoto, Madvillain, Dam-Funk, Mayer Hawthorne, KNX, Mild High Club, MNDSGN, and Anderson Paak build their careers.
