LUCYS band

16. Lucys

Lucys hones in on their brand of bedroom-pop unlike any other

Since 2017, LA bedroom pop project Lucys has been riding the now mainstream wave of indie music with a sure-fire formula. Fronted by Mono Hai as the sole constant of the band since its inception, their two albums and a constant stream of singles always conjure nostalgia-driven dreamscapes through glittery guitars and hopelessly romantic lyrics. Singing in both English and Spanish also makes for a unique spin on what’s usually expected when you hear about any new indie band. But what makes Lucys an act to keep up with is the constant zeroing in on their musical abilities, whether it be the electronic bleeps and bloops on their most popular single, “4-U,” or the ukulele ballad on the recently released “My wilted lover in my dreams of blue.” No matter the instrumentation in use, there’s sure to be passionate reminiscing of times past.

17. Amber Ryann

Amber Ryann arestles life and relationships with volcanic energy

L.A. artist Amber Ryann wields concussive beats and rapt sonics on her debut album EVEN WHEN IT FALLS APART. An 11-track collection that dropped this year as her fiery introduction to her eruptive take on alt-R&B that’s been made all the more emotionally volatile by its grimy electronica and ecstatic instrumentals. One listen is all it takes to ensure you’re hooked on the way Ryann digs her teeth into her bass-thrumming confessionals. Navigating everything from romantic angst (“WHITE LIES”) to facing down the weight of her mom’s cancer diagnosis (“FALL APART”) — Ryann’s music spans a spectrum of existential growing pains that she tries to obliterate with her invigorating sound.

18. Maude

Get tangled in the dreamy indie-pop of Maude

Maud just released her debut EP Intertwine a few months ago — sharing four sonorous and melodically lush songs that have ingratiated the singer/songwriter into our list of rising talent. From the dreamy synths that swell throughout her soundscapes to the streaks of electric riffs that cut through them like lightning. Maud’s creations unfold as a blissful catharsis as she leads you through the theatricality that naturally seems to exhale from her music. While there’s no news on any tour plans keep an eye out for her imminent arrival at an intimate venue near you!

19. Gloomer

Gloomer creates glitchy shoegaze for the angsty dancer in us all

On his debut EP One More Time the Los Angeles-based artist Gloomer (Elliott Kozel) finds an earnest sweet spot between his love for Elliot Smith and drum machine-driven anthems. Composed of a string of rapid-fire singles he released over the year like the aptly named “Drumjoy” and frenetically electronica “Rolling.” Energized by the breathless kineticism his music seems to self-generate and a talent for finding the overlapping nodes of high energy that connect the myriad genres he taps into, Gloomer’s tracks are impossibly infectious. Gloomer doesn’t have any dates set for next year just yet but it’s only a matter of time before he’s hitting the stage in L.A.

20. Soltera

Hypnotic dance tracks are Soltera’s specialty

Armed with her insatiable experimental dance tracks, the California-born Soltera (Tania Ordoñez) has become a growing fixation amongst the backyard shows she’s graced across Los Angeles. And after you’ve basked in the heady house and techno oscillations that quake throughout her debut EP Sin Compromiso — it’s pretty obvious why. The music she generates is equal parts mesmeric beats and rushes of electronica. Throughout which, Soltera’s pulsating vocals are transmitted, echoing to create everything from haunting to euphoric atmospheres.

Stay tuned for the next set of artists and bands to watch in 2023.
