Artists You Should Know: Varas Says "Gotta Go" to Harmfully Turbulent Relationships on New Single

Varas, the project of 25-year-old self-taught producer and singer/songwriter Benjamin Muñoz Varas, has offered up a sauntering new song in the form of “Gotta Go.” The single comes in the aftermath of his recent EP There You Go! which arrived as a meteoric and genre-shapeshifting collection of sonically volatile tracks. His music weaving in and out of rock, punk, hip-hop, jazz, and soul with a proclivity for crafting fiery pop hooks.

With its scratchy riffs and vigorous bass pummeling, “Gotta Go” cuts into the foolhardy idolization and suffering of people who are a consistently malignant influence. Plugging into the live wire of its buoyantly kinetic melody Varas emerges from behind heady and frayed electro-beats with desperate conviction. “All of my friends say you gotta go,” he murmurs loathingly. “They say you kill and corrupt my soul.”

“‘Gotta Go’ touches on times of idiotic admiration,” Varas said of the single. “When you put someone on a pedestal and nothing can pull them down from it. The consequences could be heavenly or a living hell, and that’s the charm of it.”

As the beat kicks in he outlines all the ways this person is a corrosive presence in their life. Varas mirrors the raw frenetics of the track’s alt-pop/rock switch-footing with his unabashedly visceral songwriting. Punctuating every jaunty guitar bite with searing affirmations to let go of this person: “You are the smoke and I’m the lungs / I am the vein and you’re the drug.”

Yet a clean-cut goodbye is a rare thing to come by in such situations. Especially when those people oscillate wildly between making your life absolutely miserable and incredibly wonderful. As Varas confesses on the tack: “But if you’re mine baby I’m all yours.”
