Indie Anthony shared his driving post-punk rumbler “Don’t let me take my time,” to close out 2023 in case you missed it. If you haven’t yet had a chance to plug in or dive into his discography, this is your chance to discover a new sonic obsession. He will also be hitting the road this month, joining zzzahara on a string of East Coast dates around North America — a truly perfect lineup featuring two stellar artists.

Although it might sound like a New Year’s resolution, “Don’t let me take my time” actually finds Anthony caught in the melancholic swell of uncertainty that’s started to torrent around a relationship. But like previous singles “dance away tonight” and “scrape my teeth” it’s a gloomily dazzling introspection adorned with luxuriantly glimmering riffs and sullen vocals.

The track itself opens with a clamor of drums hammering away before they’re joined by an effervescent explosion of scintillating synths and guitars. Their high-pitched shrieks and whines offer a sublime answer to his earnest heartache. “I don’t know what’s right / Can’t make up my mind,” Anthony drones with an entrancing langor. “I’m switching all the time / And I’m running out of lies.”

As he wrestles with paralyzing indecision and a predisposition to avoid making one, the pulse of the song seems to quicken. Growing ever more anthemic, its throbbing beats reach a fever pitch, and the glimmer of its smoldering melody begins to ignite. You’re now caught in the undertow of turbulent and raw emotion that ebbs and flows just below the surface of his depthless soundscapes.

The only release comes from the echoed groans that resound from within the heady rush of “don’t let me take my time.” Anthony gives voice to the quiet but deafening fear that a delay in romance is enough to derail fate. “Will you say goodbye,” he murmurs from beneath the waves. “If we were meant to be.”
