Joshua Tree-based duo FireBug share an anthem of raw and rallying emotion on their latest single “Red, White and Blue.” Their talent for melding New Orleans blues with folk serves them well in the creation of the dually momentous and foreboding anthem. It arrives as the band’s first new song since their 2022 album No Return and just might signal their imminent return.
At its core “Red, White and Blue” smolders like the slow-burning fuse of a nation polarized to frightening extremes. One that tries to forge some sense of unity despite the many ways the very fabric of society appears to be tearing at the seams. FireBug meets that volatile disharmony with electrifying honesty and the ultimately comforting reminder that we all have a stake in this swirling chaos.
Lead vocalist Juliette Tworsey channels that message with fiery passion. Her voice fanning the flames sparked by guitarist Jules Shapiro as he delivers one molten riff after another. The song’s frantic melody teeters between adrenaline-fueled anxiety and a hail mary of hopeful vigor. Its words double as both a desperate warning and a rousing vision of just how close we are to either collapse or renewal.
But as you near the end of “Red, White and Blue” the pair end things on an ecstatically blistering high note. Tworsey howling along to Shapiro’s shrieking guitar solo and a rapt flourish of keys ignite a fire in your belly. The resulting conflagration melts down the flag into its most fundamental parts, leaving behind only its primary hues. In that same spirit, FireBug tries to highlight the obscured similarities that unite most Americans, even if they are woefully unaware of them.
FireBug said of the new single: “This is a song about peace, coming together, and moving away from the divisiveness that has permeated much of our culture here in the U.S. It’s also about recognizing the struggles of everyday people that come from all backgrounds who are just trying to live their lives free from the burdens that plague us all in varying degrees. We have more in common than what separates us. Ultimately, love is better than hate and there is hope the American dream is still attainable for us all.”
