This week our ears have been enthralled by new releases from Amindi, SOFI TUKKER, and Balu Brigada. Our first two obsessions oscillate at different ends of the spectrum in terms of energy and tempo, sharing tender but uncompromising clarifications of intimacy and the therapeutic quality of dancing your ass off. Lastly, we bring the latest single from an Australian duo with a knack for punchy rollickers. Be sure to check out our Best New Songs of the Month playlist to find more new favorites!
Amindi “what i need”

With the release of Take What You Need and Then Some, Amindi expands her 2023 mixtape with the addition of four new songs. The outro for the now 18-track collection, “what i need,” arrives as a slowly churning groove of unflinching, no-nonsense affirmations about the kind of lover she craves and needs. “I need you to give me what I need / Or you can leave,” she repeats with hypnotic lucidity over its simmering melody. “That probably worked for you before / But now with me.” Her breathy confessions and unabashed honesty layering themselves over the track’s intoxicating rhythms.

SOFI TUKKER “Throw Some Ass”

SOFI TUKKER, the project of duo Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern, has dropped the lead single for their third album BREAD, out August 23rd, with the aptly-named hypnotic dance track “Throw Some Ass.” Building toward riveting, hip-tossing drops of electronica, you’re led from each ecstatic rush to the next by the elegantly irreverent vocals of Hawley-Weld. “It feels so good to throw some ass / Turn it ’round, can you make it clap?” she coos dreamily. ” Give the old man a heart attack / Free your mind when you throw it back.”
An anthem for cutting and shaking loose, the liberating rush it exudes was borne out of Hawley-Weld’s struggle with chronic back pain and its sudden healing through dance. The music video directed by Aerin Moren envisions the pair running the SOFI TUKKER Center for Asses That Don’t Move Good. Filmed in Rio de Janeiro at the Palácio das Laranjeiras, there are just as many shots of the stunning architecture as there are of the doctors’ ass-less uniforms — exactly what you’d expect from a song that celebrates the curative powers of ass-shaking.
“The song started where I was working on some Brazilian funk-inspired drumbeats,” Halpern said of the song’s thrumming energy and sound. “This was right after we had spent some time in Brazil at Carnaval last year. At 6:00 a.m., we went into this nightclub under the parade. Someone was playing a baile funk set, and I was blown away. The song really gives the vibe of that club, Carnaval, and Brazil.”
You can see SOFI TUKKER on tour at The Torch at the LA Memorial Coliseum on November 2nd. Visit them on their website and Instagram to stay updated on new releases and tour announcements.

Balu Brigada “So Cold”

Australian duo Balu Brigada have polished off another electrifying spell of riff-driving goodness. Unfolding as a coiling release of jangly guitars, “So Cold” shares a jittery dive into the inebriated delusions and misinterpretations of an alcohol-fueled allure. The song’s lively music video, directed/edited by Claire Matthews, finds Henry and Pierre Beasley adorned and surrounded by red-hot hues as they dig into the jittery sizzle of their latest alt-pop earworm.
The band said of the single: “It’s the realisation that there’s a lot of smoke and mirrors when it comes to attraction, and that a lot of things that feel like ‘mystique’ when you’ve got beer goggles on, are actually just someone being elusive.”
