While she tours across the Atlantic in Europe, LA-raised singer Dora Jar is similarly setting sail towards a breezy acoustic direction on her new single, “The Explorer.” Dora already made waves last year with No Way To Relax When You Are On Fire, a sprawling debut album where she pushed the boundaries of alt-pop that simultaneously reflected the record’s varied influences.
The same could be said for “The Explorer,” an aptly titled track in which Dora steers the ship towards a newfound dreamlike quality. Aside from the cheeky nod to the “Dora the Explorer” cartoon, Dora’s combination of dynamic vocals and lyrics about alienation makes it so the song digs deep in terms of emotions, with the final product coming out on the other end as an introspective journey.
Even when the second half of “The Explorer” momentarily ditches gentle acoustics for roaring alt-rock, a switch-up that serves as a reminder of Dora’s experimentation, it all comes out sounding like smooth sailing.
And although “The Explorer” is an adventurous song fitting for a well-traveled artist like Dora – who has opened for everyone from Billie Eilish to HAIM, with an LA date on Oct. 9 – it carries her familiar imprint on alt-pop that proves why she’s here to stay.
