Although they are both in the midst of touring nationally and worldwide, singer-songwriters Susannah Joffe and Esha Tewari are teaming up for a remix of Joffe’s song, “You’d Kill Me If You Could.” Initially released as a solo single off Joffe’s most recent release, Cult Leader, the feature from Tewari adds another voice to a song with impressive vocals. The remix also came out ahead of the two’s joint show at the Fonda Theatre last week, taking to the stage at parallel points in their careers where they are similarly on a fast climb to the top.

While the original version of the track was already a wistful heartwrencher that let its airy instrumentation take center stage, Joffe and Tewari’s collaboration punctuates the already resonant lyrics about complicated parent-child relationships.

Even with Joffe’s original vision for the song remaining intact, exemplified by the fact that it runs roughly for the same length, Tewari gets to deliver an equally personal verse detailing traumatic events in line with Joffe’s unfiltered songwriting that never sugarcoats any of the details.

By the time “You’d Kill Me If You Could” reaches the cathartic “Like mother, like daughter” bridge, the teamwork between Joffe and Tewari heard earlier in the track lets the themes hit harder than the original, proving how even a slight change to a song’s structure can make it all the more impactful.
