All-girl rock group The Anti Groupies has something to say about what others expect from a band in today’s age. And with their debut album, Pretty Vicious, they’re letting their presence be known with an aggressive fusion of glam rock, power pop, and grunge, as well as straight rock.
The quartet – which began with and still includes singer Cassidy Fleeman, guitarist Isabella Broersma, bassist Sydney Moore, and drummer Kyla Foster – started in 2022. All four, having grown up in the Long Beach and Orange County area, came together over a love for sharing their music with others. Whether at a proper venue or in a backyard, they simply wanted to play.
Within less than three years of officially debuting, the band found themselves in a studio with producer Jim Wirt, best known for working alongside Incubus, Fiona Apple, and several others. Although the album was recorded at Santa Cruz Studios, there’s no doubt it was made to be played live or, at the very least, at maximum volume.
One of the album’s singles, “Not My Problem,” tackles setting up boundaries and proving habitual linesteppers wrong. The track is also a shining example of how they stay true to several facets of rock while injecting pop melodies in a similar fashion to bands like Paramore.
In the same ballpark, “Social Battery,” which happens to be their biggest song thus far, is full of 2000s angst that many pop stars are inspired by, yet often fall short of capturing the spirit. At the same time, the instrumentation from all the members could easily fit alongside classic rock bands of years past, a considerable feat since that era isn’t always paired with Paramore-esque melodies.
Their name alone speaks to the way they approach breaking down the barriers of rock music. Coming from Fleeman’s personal experience, where she couldn’t get into a gig and was told no groupies were allowed. The moment stuck with her until she and the rest of The Anti Groupies came together.
Considering how much noise they’ve made in a short amount of time, not to mention while remaining independent, it’s safe to say The Anti Groupies have shown why they deserve entrance to anywhere and everywhere.
