Los Angeles-based, indie-pop outfit Sego have joined with Big Black Delta to share Quid Pro Quo, the split-single release of “Into The Night”/”Shame” that features the two bands covering one another’s songs. For “Into The Night,” Sego gives the Big Black Delta track a driving melancholy, meshing the soft ache of Spencer Petersen’s croons with a glowing array of guitar lines and meandering percussion. Eventually unraveling into a swirling mix of overlayed, wild-eyed riffs and crashing drums, “Into The Night” finds a sense of triumph in the dark. And the cacophony bleeds sweetly into “Shame,” Big Black Delta’s take on Sego’s own, one filled to the brim with electronic-backed soulfulness, eerie soundscapes, and dazzling instrumentals.
“Covering a song written by a friend tends to carry a different weight than just choosing something from the canon. I suppose there is a depth in knowing that someone real (in your life) made something important to you. Toward the end of our tour opening for Big Black Delta, we started covering “Into The Night” from their set,” Spencer Petersen of Sego said. “We ran the risk of annoying them since they played it right after us, but fortunately they have a good sense of humor. So I wanted to run an experiment and cover each other on the same release. I like how the permutations create an alternate reality while also tipping the hat.”
