Sega Bodega, the performing moniker of London-based Salvador Navarrete, continues to be a preeminent voice in experimental electronica with the release of his highly anticipated sophomore album Romeo. Los Angeles will get a chance to hear it live when Sega Bodega headlines the Lodge Room in Highland Park on Feb. 23, 2022.
Sega Bodega’s new album is a ten-track collection of the multi-hyphenate creative’s most enrapturing music to date, filled as it is with Bodega’s penchant for putting together blindingly dizzying soundscapes that oscillate under the control of his mesmerizing vocals and swirling electronics. Thematically, the new album springs from Bodega’s imagined relationship with a “mythical girlfriend made entirely of light” called Luci, and it’s from this that the blissful emotions that beam from the album’s songs are emitted.
From the break-beat drops and shifty textures of “Angel On My Shoulder,” to the warped vocalizations that grow in crescendo alongside sonorous tones on “I Need Nothing From You,” Bodega conjures up engrossing memories of searing love and pain on Romeo. On the budding beats of “Naturopathe,” he teams up with French singer/songwriter Charlotte Gainsbourg, who offers her ghostly and ethereal murmurs to the song’s pulsating rhythms; while on “Cicada,” Bodega taps Venezuelan avant-garde artist Arca to create the track’s riveting cascades of ecstatic electronica. The album ends in a rhapsody of sound and emotion that bursts on “Luci,” the name of Bodega’s mythologized girlfriend, as he channels all of the album’s overwhelming euphoria and throbbing heartache.
