Tolliver dropped an exquisitely funky new song to close 2023, but if you’ve yet to have a taste, there’s no better time than right now to ring in the new year with “Booyabaze.” Produced by Wesley Singerman, Taylor Dexter, and Chong the Nomad, the single is a glamorously intoxicating cherry on top of the string of offerings from the Los Angeles-based since the release of his Daddyland EP. You won’t want to miss out when Tolliver brings this fearsome jam to The Lodge Room in Los Angeles on January 12th.

Like a long-lost funk record from the 70s, “Booyabaze” is both a seismic revelation and rebirth of those illustrious sounds. Its livewire electricity is supplied by a luxuriant array of synths, one particularly thrilling guitar solo, and the rapt elastic impacts of its drums. At the center of it all is the suave and fabulously swaggering Tolliver strutting through its iridescent melody and commandeering its feverish dance breaks.

At nearly six minutes, the track crackles with euphoric funk energy — the kind that would possess any crowd within seconds. The first half is a wild corkscrew through radiant tones and textures, exploding with light like the colored tiles on a disco dancefloor. But after a fearsome breakdown comes the distorted bellows of Tolliver as he injects a whole new level of freaky delirium into its already alluring hold on you.

“Booyabaze” comes with a music video directed by Tolliver and starring both TwoLips and Dani Lené. Inspired by the glitzy fashion of Bootsy Collins, Rick James, and Sylvester, the film follows the trio as they turn a mini-mart into their own personal runway. Dressed head to toe in tight red pants and a crimson blazer, Tolliver emerges as usual centerstage, stealing the show, caught up in the video’s delicious revelry of excess and snack theft.
