Considering the current indie-rock landscape that’s emerged within the last few years, it’s not a shock to see how fast Australian indie outfit Royel Otis has risen among the ranks of similar acts. Since their inception in 2021 by Royel Maddell and Otis Pavlovic, who combined their first names in the same vein as their constant combining of genres, Royel Otis hasn’t slowed down. Prior to the release of their seven-track EP Sofa Kings, they had crossed over from their native Australia to the US and elsewhere off the back of singles such as “Oysters In My Pocket” and “Sofa King.”
Less than a year after Sofa Kings, Royel Otis is already gearing up for their Feb. 16 follow-up PRATTS & PAIN via Ourness. Singles for the duo’s debut album began dropping soon after Sofa Kings was released in March, starting with the punchy post-punk of “Adored” and most recently with the catchy dream pop-stricken “Heading For The Door.” Contrary to the quick succession of Royel Otis’ output, PRATTS & PAIN seems to be shaping up to be an eclectic departure from the breezy sound that defined early releases like “Without U.”
Given their fast-growing audience in the U.S., it was inevitable Royel Otis would be looking at a booked 2024 judging by their upcoming US tour and Australian tour, including a slew of planned festival appearances, including BottleRock and Boston Calling, and more than likely Coachella. Within May alone, they will be playing at Salt Lake City’s Kilby Block Party and Atlanta’s Shaky Knees. On top of those performances, their US tour will make a stop in LA at The Roxy on May 16.

But besides their slew of 2024 shows, “Sofa King,” which reached #25 on the Billboard Alternative Airplay Chart, is among their most remarkable achievements in a relatively short career. For a band considered alternative by quick industry classifications, their rising prominence is better described as seismic and bound to shake the indie field internationally.
