Despite various solo efforts in between projects, modern-day souldies Durand Jones & The Indications are back together for their upcoming album, Flowers, out June 27 via Dead Oceans. Their lead single, “Been So Long,” cheekily plays off their brief hiatus and turns it into a hypnotic daze reminiscent of their back catalog than the disco inspiration heard on their last effort, Private Space. For “Been So Long,” Aaron Frazer takes on lead singer duties, trading in his typically sensual voice and instead choosing to lead the group vocals.
While the track is a more meditative piece, it’s consequently the group at their most mature, with their penchant for slow jams still intact. Rather than continuing to experiment– something that has proven to work for them within their neo-soul frame–they know what works best for them, bringing in brain worm melodies, swirling instruments, and a distinct sonic quality that pays homage to their inspirations as much as it does service their efforts to slowly seduce listeners time and time again, succeeding without fail.

“All of these songs touch on such mature topics, things that we never got to sing about before,” says Jones. “We are all in our 30s, have all been through ups and downs in our personal lives and professional lives, and flowers are a sign of maturity, growth, spring, productivity.” Frazer adds: “We took the spirit of play that started the project, and added in the wisdom and lessons we’ve acquired through the years.”
