Governor's Ball 2016

It’s that time of year again as we await the announcement of lineups for some of the nation’s biggest music festivals, and next on the list is the homegrown Governors Ball which takes place the first weekend of June at Randall’s Island Park.

The event, which last year saw massive performances by Drake, Deadmau5, and Florence and the Machine, has seemingly rallied to put together a bill worth contending against Coachella’s recently “reunion-heavy” lineupsThe festival will see performances from Beck, Kanye West, The Killers, M83, HAIM, Robyn, Death Cab For Cutie, Father John Misty, De La Soul, Courtney Barnett, CHVRCHES, and Eagles of Death Metal.

As if the gift of such an overwhelmingly stacked lineup wasn’t enough, many of the headliners are poised to release albums this year. Both Beck and Kanye (who haven’t shared a stage since their 2015 Grammy incident) have released singles in anticipation of their new album’s, while indie-rock heroes The Strokes and The Killers are working on new material as well.

Other areas of delightfulness include the fact that Albert Hammond Jr. will be performing solo at the same festival fellow band mate Julian Casablancas and The Strokes will be performing at. Other highlights will most definitely include Death Cab for Cutie and Of Monsters and Men, both of which are coming off a huge year with the release of their newest albums.

But apart from the music, the festival itself has always focused on curating the best of New York cuisine, craft beer, and art, taking to heart its representation as the Big Apple’s premier music festival. Governors Ball used to be referred to as the “Coachella” on the East Coast, but in recent years it’s more than earned its name and now the euphemism is somewhat unfair. With the unveiling of its 2016 lineup, it’s fair to say that the music and art event has officially leapt to become one of the country’s top festivals.
