It's about that time! We've flipped our cards and shined our crystal balls and now it's time to present you all with our annual forecast of Los Angeles artists / bands to watch in the new year. This year we upped the ante from 15 L.A. bands to 20! And trust, after what we saw and heard last year -- we probably could have added a few more; but these digital pages shine with new music just about every day and there shall be room for all. This year we're doing things a little differently in an effort to give each artist a bit more shine here, and on our socials. We'll be rolling out 5 new acts every day until we hit 20. So be sure to bookmark this page for the latest additions. Similar to years past, our annual forecast features up-and-coming Los Angeles (area) indie bands, lesser known acts and singer-songwriters. Many of these bands have already been featured on our pages, and / or we caught them live. These L.A. acts have made us smile not just through their music, but the content that comes along with it — such as music videos, honest / #realtalk Instagrams, putting in WERK at local venues, and just showing the f*ck up. Whether guitar rock, electro pop or feel-good serenades and more -- Grimy Goods’ annual forecast of L.A. bands and artists to watch includes all walks of life, encompassing those that create music -- no matter what genre -- that simply stand out with some serious potential. Past Grimy Goods forecasts have featured rising Los Angeles acts such as Rituals of Mine, Velvet Starlings, Reyna Tropical, Lola Kirke, Bishop Briggs, The Marias, Lauren Ruth Ward, The Regrettes, Alexandra Savior, Ryn Weaver, Gallant, Meg Myers, Girlpool, Odessa, Death Valley Girls, BANKS and more. You can view all of our past forecasts here. With that said, in no particular order, check out our 2020 Artists to Watch below! Kate Clover Set to Shine in 2020 with Her Throwback Rock 'N' Roll Kate Clover at Lodge Room -- Photo: ZB Images A bit of Ramones, a bit Wanda Jackson and of course, a bit of Blondie (and not just because the color of her hair) -- Kate Clover is expected to bud in 2020 with her fiery dose of rock 'n' roll. Formerly of Ex-Sage, Clover has always had a knack for commanding the attention of a room. Whether her style, guitar skills, or that delightful throwback-rock 'n' roll croon -- Clover is a pleasure to catch live. We recently caught Kate Clover at the Lodge Room while touring with Grimy Goods' fave Death Valley Girls; and well, her set was pretty damn awesome. This past October, Clover released her debut single, “Channel Zero.” The punchy punk track is absolutely addictive. With a playful sound dripping with power chords, the song is actually a “defiant rallying cry against mindless media and political puppets” And just a few days ago, Kate Clover shared the live video for "Channel Zero." Created from footage shot over months on the road touring with Tiger Army, Sadgirl, and Death Valley Girls, the video captures the raw energy of Clover’s live show. https://www.youtube.com/watch?vih5doXRQ95I “These songs come to life onstage,” explains Clover. “I wanted this project to be a plug and play type of band. Keeping it as simple and as raw as possible. My first musical love is punk so getting to play a blasting set like ours was heaven on earth.” Kate Clover will be taking over the Bootleg Theater every Monday night this January. Her free residency night comes along with performances by Cat Scan, Strawberry Army, Premonitions, Vaguess, Nice, and more! As well as DJ sets from Death Valley Girls, Sextile, Crocodiles and Danny Dodge. Clover's residency kicks off Jan. 6 with Nice, Jordan Jones, Vaguess, and a DJ set by Brandon Welchez of Crocodiles. With a debut full-length LP coming out later this year, fans can rejoice in some new material very soon. Kate Clover is set to release a cover of Wanda Jackson's "Funnel of Love" -- this Friday (Jan. 10). Those who have recently seen her on tour know the effects of this song when performed live by Kate Clover. Follow Kate via Instagram and Facebook to keep up with her moves. Words: Sandra Olinger Talker - Photo: Niles Gregory Talker is the Alt-Pop Songstress to Take 2020 by Storm with Her Debut Celeste Tauchar--the budding singer/songwriter behind Talker--has spent 2019 positioning herself for her breakout year. Her most recent single, "Learning the Feeling," is as much a testament to her musical talent as it is to her tenacity in sticking with her work as a musician. The result is an alt-pop mixture that sees Tauchar--in the music video for the song--asserting a sense of control over herself and her aspirations via a blistering catharsis. The name of her act is in itself a symbol of people's underestimation of her: "Talker" being the way people have been mispronouncing her name all her life. But now Tauchar is ready to make her debut, to step into the limelight she's danced around since she first started cutting her teeth in the electro-pop band FRENSHIP, and find her niche. https://www.youtube.com/watch?voPVeO8fqilA&appdesktop With plans for new singles and an EP slated for release in March 2020, as well as a full-length release in the near future, Talker is poised to make some big moves in the new year. "My goal for 2020 is really to just keep consistently putting out music that I'm really proud of and letting that speak for itself. I've grown as an artist so much in the past year and a half that this project has been active, and if the pattern continues I can only expect to continue pushing myself and releasing new material throughout the whole year." Talker will be going on a small west coast tour in January 2020, you can find tickets for the show near you here. Words: Steven Ward Road Worn Rachel Oto Finds Her Footing, with New Music and Tour Planned for 2020 People say that Los Angeles is fake, but they don’t know Rachel Oto. She makes self-proclaimed saloon rock, or what may also be described as brooding Americana, comprised of vivid storytelling and intricate acoustic instrumentation. Oto’s honesty is what sets her songwriting apart and makes her an artist to watch in the new decade. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v_pCaC05v16k In 2016, Oto began her solo project with a four-track EP called Run, an apt description of the music itself. Her style seemed rooted in rockabilly, racing to the bridge with a cascade of strings and guitar accompaniment. This past summer she showed us that she is capable of so much more, not only sonically, but emotionally as well; her 2019 single, “Road Song” is held together by a distant harmonica wail that defines the song almost as much as the lyrics. Oto plans to waste no time in the new year, with a single, music video, and EP launch all in the works. Her next single, “Angel,” will appear on an as-yet untitled EP due out in March; fans can expect to see her on tour sometime in the spring. Follow Rachel Oto on Instagram and Facebook. Words: Zoe Elaine Oyster Kids -- Photo Credit: Blake Zimmerman Oyster Kids Leave Musical Bread Crumbs Leading into 2020 With music that can best described as bubble gum that bites back, L.A. locals Oyster Kids closed 2019 with another sultry and synth-y single, one of many singles released by the band recently. “Give In,” is the newest release from Oyster Kids, but the band is already busy with 2020 projections that include a full length album release, multiple collaboration singles and more touring. While we wait for these things to come into fruition, we’ll have to make due with “Give In.” The tune is a perfect follow up to their previously released singles including“Work It Out” and “Losing My Mind,” both released earlier this year. Equally as poppy, “Give In” evokes the same sweet vibes and dreamy atmosphere. It’s a song drenched in sugary sweet glaze that makes it shiny and hard to ignore. It’s fluid and bubbly, with perfectly timed instrumentals and echoey vocals. But, it’s message is not just bubblegum pop. The song’s lyrics delve into deeper themes including self discovery and acceptance. https://www.youtube.com/watch?vspdvuA86CVk Oyster Kids consists of Andrew Eapen (vocals, guitar), Jonathan Bradley (drums), Robbie Gullage (bass), and Roy Tanaka (keyboards). The group started recording together as a home recording project with Eapen writing and producing the band’s music. So far, Oyster Kids have only released singles, but these musical bread crumbs will soon lead to a full length release next year. To keep an eye out on this young and budding band, visit their website and follow them on Facebook. Words: Patricia Sanchez Chaos Chaos Hype Up and Look Ahead at the Next Decade with New Singles Chaos Chaos, the indie-synthpop creation of sisters Chloe and Asya Saavedra, has had a busy decade. After releasing three critically acclaimed albums as Smoosh, in 2012 the duo had to change the name of their band because of its growing association with Snooki, kickstarting a new era in their musical careers as Chaos Chaos. Two EPs and a full-length album later, Chloe and Asya are clearly ready to ring in a new decade with more surprises and new music. The band has teased more new music in 2020 even while already releasing three new singles to ring in the new year with: "Theaters," "Improv Song," and "Armed and Dangerous." They've also shared a reissue of Withershins, their final album as Smoosh, complete with bonus track "He Will Always Come Back." https://www.youtube.com/watch?vTEW-5LpLmL8 Like we've said, they've been super busy. You can watch the videos for two of their new singles and in the process get a taste for what Chaos Chaos has in store for the new year. Stripping away some of their more electronic tendencies, Chloe and Asya blend post-punk energy and rabid percussion lines with lush-pop sonics on "Theaters"--catching themselves in a similar vein to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs or Bloodboy. While on "Improv Song," the duo finds solace in the wide-open spaces of a listful synth ballad. The point is even as Chaos Chaos look back, they're constantly looking forward; each new iteration of their music and identities never truly feeling like some return to form but rather an ever-constant evolution of their sound. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v0KeJxke5oew "It's about the inner and outer world and how people navigate it," the duo said of new single "Theaters." "We can go through the motions of life, projecting everything from past experiences onto every new place we go. Every alleyway we walk through, every room we enter, or every person we meet can be seen as a projection of our inner world. The song is about thinking of the world as a theater that plays out our own inner dramas." Chaos Chaos has plans for new music in 2020, be on the lookout for new releases and a tour. Visit their website, Facebook, and Instagram to stay updated on future releases and tour announcements. Words: Steven Ward Girl Friday -- Photo by: Kylie Shaffer Girl Friday Speak Their Minds and They Have a Lot to Say In 2020, the voices of the marginalized will need amplification. That is one of the reasons why this year we are excited to hear more from Girl Friday, a local feminist collective that turns the volume way up. Last June the band dropped their sophomore release, an EP called Fashion Conman out on Hardly Art. They briefly toured, but never stopped coming up with ideas for more music. Today fans can look forward to the debut full-length from Girl Friday, expected this summer, as well as a West Coast tour with Disq, including a stop at SXSW. https://youtu.be/uuwj6Nm8T4Y It’s easy to get wrapped up in the simple sophistication of their punk aesthetic, yet there is so much more to be gained from knowing Girl Friday more deeply. The band was founded by bassist Libby Hsieh and guitarist Vera Ellen, who are joined by drummer Virginia Pettis and guitarist Sierra Scott; all four members have equal responsibility in songwriting. And it shows—each person’s personality shines through with every note, and on Fashion Conman, they all took turns letting their individual voices be heard. What they had to say ranged from calling out predatory men to taking jabs at the entertainment industry's hypocrisy. We can all take notes from their dedication to equity and community, and can’t wait to hear more. Follow Girl Friday on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. Words: Zoë Elaine Cowgirls -- Photo: Zane Roessell Cowgirls To Bend Country-Goth-Metal into New Contortions in 2020 Cowgirls, the vehicle for Al Moore's solo musical endeavors (Cowgirls), has big plans for 2020 as the singer/songwriter intends to release a new EP in the first half of the new year that'll be sure to fill all your goth-country, pseudo-metal needs. Moore's creation has always been about confronting societal norms and long complacent ideas, shaking the dust from these with his ever-evolving, ever-dynamic sound that often blends country with a myriad of genres. This is truer than ever on Cowgirls upcoming EP, which the singer describes as "incredibly honest, raw, and at times insane" and will bend even by their standards the limits of such off-kilter combinations. From helicopter crashes to vampiric romanticism, Cowgirls subject matter is as delightfully outlandish as its sonics informed as it is by Moore's lightspeed of a mind; but as always perpetually grounded in a human authenticity that is never left by the wayside, rooted as they are in his own burgeoning introspection on life, music, and his love affair with both. https://soundcloud.com/cowgirlsband/bad-news-im-afraid "After the better half of a decade behind the bass in a few different projects that inadvertently lead to Cowgirls releasing two debut singles last year, the forthcoming wave will find me saddling the microphone live for the first time," Al said of his plans for 2020. "And continuing to emancipate the bottled ideas that have been silently shaking in the wings of other groups and chapters. We're just excited to be a new band with a new ideal to symbolize and report. Also, it could very well be due to aging, or to the fact that we're all starting to pack some years of experience under our belts, but the old adages speaking mere perseverance seem to be parallel to apexes of reinvention that are a rather frequent occurrence, as long as one is willing to attune themselves to the possibilities of growth and reinterpretation. You keep listening and shuffling tiles on the mosaic. Then, the bigger picture emerges. Finally. That's what's next." Words: Steven Ward Annika Rose Poised To Make Quite the Splash in 2020 L.A. native and singer/songwriter Annika Rose recently shared a music video for her song "Fly To You" off her debut EP Ventura Boulevard and it is the perfect jittery, whimsical companion to the singer's likewise persona. At just 17-years-old Rose is poised to make quite the splash in 2020 with big plans to release her first album set tentatively for this year, but it's what she's already accomplished that makes this artist so exciting to watch and listen to. Her video for "Fly To You," directed by Ece Gurlu (Christina Aguilera, Halsey) and Kit Walters, finds Rose at her most imaginative and gleefully intimate, spilling out all the questions and insecurities that emerge in the wake of heartbreak via playfully hand-drawn animations and images of herself in cardboard wings running down the street. There's something deliriously hopeful about the way Rose even deals with such grief and when overlayed over her hook-filled, organically pop sensibilities -- her songs jump with a kind of tentative optimism. https://www.youtube.com/watch?vzkKhhwf06Y0&featureyoutu.be "In 2020 I really want to test myself as a writer through trial and error. I’m so used to writing in a certain environment. I want to find more outlets for curiosity which in turn will affect how I write and the content of what I’m talking about. I think if I can do that I will accomplish my goal to release my first full length album, and play shows in every possible place that I can! I’m so excited to keep sharing my stories and experiences through music, and hearing how it resonates with other people. It’s the most fulfilling thing in the world." Words: Steven Ward BIIANCO Firing Up To Blaze Some Trails in 2020 Gabby Bianco's decade has been full of tiny sparks both musical and soulful, all leading to the birth of a brand new blaze. BIIANCO was born this year, her new moniker for all things artistic, and she went straight from producing her first one-womxn live show to selling out venues in London. https://www.youtube.com/watch?vnSgL_5n7hvA&featureyoutu.be Off the heels of three notable releases this year, BIIANCO shared with us that she has a full length mixtape ready to go for next year. January will receive the first single, and allegedly, the tape has a slew of artist collaborations waiting to be unveiled. “In 2020, I want to continue to expand my knowledge and horizons as a producer and keep collaborating with artists I look up to." BIIANCO says. "I can’t wait for everyone to hear all the music that I’ve been heads down creating in 2019. It’s going to be a firestorm." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v6Z4ykSsZTzY Having just signed to APA talent agency, BIIANCO is scheming her next U.S. tour with a return to Europe. "As an artist in general, my goal is to provide people with music that makes dance and ugly cry. I want to crawl into the creepy corners of my mind and hand people over raw emotion smothered with beats they can’t help moving to. I also want to be the first woman to win a Grammy for producer of the year (ya gotta shoot for the stars eh?)" We have no doubt she'll get that Grammy nom at this rate. Ugly cry with BIIANCO in 2020 by streaming her music here and following her on Instagram. Words: Ariana Tibi Automatic Will Continue to Make a Big Name for Themselves in 2020 After being immersed in the Los Angeles DIY music scene, post-punk trio Automatic came together in 2017 with plans to put out some music. Made up of Izzy Glaudini (synths, vocals), Lola Dompé (drums, vocals) and Halle Saxon (bass, vocals) -- last year we saw Automic put out their droning debut, Signal. Buzzing and fuzzing with those post-punk vibes, the 11-track album was automatically a favorite in Grimy Goods' monthly playlists. With smooth bass lines, and robotic rhythms (and vocals), Automatic sound like the kind of band you would have seen rubbing elbows with Iggy Pop and Bowie back in the prime of Max's Kansas City and CBGB. Songs like “Too Much Money” smolder with thick suspense as a hypnotic bass line collides with looped synths. There's a lot of repetition in Automatic's sound, and that's a good thing. Their robot-beats are non-stop and often combined with buzzing synths and drones. This is most true in tracks like "I Love You, Fine" and "Signal." https://www.youtube.com/watch?vRyh1pG3DFV4 2019 saw Automatic on tour in the U.S. and Europe, with festival dates at Desert Daze and Levitation. The band even had the honorable spot of opening for Bauhaus' reunion shows at the Palladium (Lola's father is Kevin Haskins of Bauhaus). Automatic closed 2019 strong, and we can only imagine what great heights they'll soar to in 2020. The band has plans for a European tour this February, as well as a U.S. tour this Spring with Shopping. We're totally looking forward to seeing Automatic headline bigger venues in L.A. and beyond, as well as the festival circuit. Stay tuned to Automatic's Instagram for the latest news and new music. Words: Sandra Olinger Saro - Photo: Alexander Black Saro Finds Personal Catharsis in the Darkest Depths of his Music Saro (pronounced "sorrow"), the angel-voiced crooner and moniker of Evan Windom, has never shied away from the darker manifestations that emerge in his music. At 30-years-old, Windom has a lifetime of strife that he pulls from to populate the dark soundscapes he creates--often as a form of personal therapy--in his music. Queer, biracial, and a product of turbulent divorce -- the evolution of Windom into Saro might've happened by accident (a catalyst of a friend and him getting drunk in college and recording some covers) but everything since has been nothing but intentional. His sophomore EP Die Alone is the cathartic synthesis of all the dark shit that Saro so emphatically affirms is necessary to sing about in order to get it out of his system. Songs like "Nothing Remains" and "Justify" touch the very edges of pain and personal triumph over such monumental angst that Saro embodies in his music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v0gY3GsqYHQE Currently, Saro is in the studio working on his debut LP with singles expected to be released in the spring through a summer release, with a tour to be announced in the near future. "For me, 2020 is about collaboration and expansion. My past few projects have been pretty close to chest so I want to venture out of my cave this year. I want to cross genres and create with people who I can learn from and evolve. There’s nothing more exciting than creating with the perspectives of new musicians, visual artists, photographers, and choreographers. I also want to push myself to become a better instrumentalist as well as perform in new territories. As a human, I want to spend more time giving back to my community and stay as present as possible on this twisted fucked up journey." Visit Saro's website, Facebook, and Instagram to stay updated on new releases and tour announcements. Words: Steven Ward Local Synth Pop Artist Kingsbury Is Ready to Build on Last Year's Growth It seems that 2019 was formative for local pop-rocker Caroline Kingsbury, known simply by her surname. She reckoned with coming-of-age in today’s political landscape and her own queerness in “In My Brain” and “Breaking Apart” respectively, and those revelations were unveiled just last summer. At this point, she is overdue for an album, and her history of supporting bands like Alex Lahey and CHAI bodes well for fans seeking to hear Kingsbury live this year as well. https://youtu.be/7_t1Ls0Hktw Kingsbury’s bold synth-pop sound channels The Cure, a noted personal fave of hers, and may incidentally stir up strong nostalgia for the ‘80s. It also conjures a commanding vulnerability, emblematic of a duality that persists throughout her music. There are always two sides to her stories, yet she can’t seem to escape the complicated no-man’s-land in the middle. This Los Angeles artist is bursting with potential, so keep your ear to the ground for all things Kingsbury. Follow Kingsbury on Facebook and Instagram. Words: Zoe Elaine Los Retros -- Photo: Ross Harris Los Retros Merges Lush Dream-Pop and Central-South American Textures into Something Sublime He may just have graduated high-school but Mauri Tapia has spent already a bulk of his time creating music as Los Retros, a homage to Chilean pop group Los Ángeles Negros and purveyor of 70-80s soft-rock with Latin-pop mixed-in for good measure. Tapia has been making music since he borrowed his older brother's guitar at age eight and by sixteen he was putting tracks up online, building a dedicated following via word of mouth. With his debut EP Retrospect the woozy, dream-pop melodics have crystallized into a collection of songs that wander in-and-out of Los Retros budding consciousness. R&B tones waft soulfully through the singer/songwriter's affecting conversations on love--platonic and otherwise. https://www.youtube.com/watch?vVRQDOFaFqWk "Nostalgic Vibrations" and the decidedly funky "Last Day On Earth" reveals a near-endless well from which Los Retros draws his lush creations, with the latter promising--through a groovy horn solo, loose percussion echoes, and Tapia's pulled back croons--a near-constant state of progression and experimentation from such a young but talented voice. With plans for new music, Los Retros will kick off their new year with a handful of West Coast tour dates including stops at the House of Blues in San Diego on February 19 and the Concert Lounge in Riverside on February 20. Visit his Twitter and Instagram to stay updated on new releases and tour announcements. Words: Steven Ward Nicole Kiki Jaffe's 2020 Vision Includes Plenty of New Music In 2019, Nicole Kiki Jaffe shed her past. Letting go has spun her into a phase of expansion and in 2020, we get to reap the musical benefits. Nicole's powerful upcoming single, 'The Lion's Den', will be out on January 30th with a release show at the Hi Hat in Highland Park. She's shared with us that 2020 will bring releases she's been working on for the past three years, more dance music videos and an official, full length album. https://www.youtube.com/watch?vsbejsTO06Fw "I’m excited to finally set this music free. I want to continue collaborating with artists across genres, including other musicians, producers, photographers, dancers, choreographers, directors, and visual artists." She tells us. "I want to cultivate a more experimental dynamic in my performances, bringing in some dance and trying out some new sounds. I’m approaching this year with 2020 vision!" Catch the fervor live at her release show on January 30th with Babers, Fox Violets, and Lauren Lakis (presented by Fierce Femme Sounds). Stay tuned in by following Nicole on Instagram. Words: Ariana Tibi Samantha Sidley is the Jazz Vocalist and Suave Songstress You Need in 2020 Los Angeles-based jazz singer Samantha Sidley released her debut album last year in the form of Interior Person but she's poised to make 2020 another year of milestones. This month, Sidley will be releasing a solo vocal, non-instrumental cover of her favorite childhood song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" on January 17. From there the singer has a free show at Zebulon (L.A.) and three nights in New York at The Green Room -- shows that you don't want to miss if you can swing it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v1glEdQNP13k Sidley has already built up a budding reputation as a beguiling performer and entertainer. Music videos for songs "I Can't Listen" (written by Inara George) and "I Like Girls," both directed by Nigel DeFriez, reveal the large pendulum swings of emotion Sidley can encompass in her music --maneuvering from French-cinema inspired and noir to the color-splash of ebullient pop with slick dexterity. Sidley already has big goals for the new year and you'd be remiss to leave her off your radar for even just a season. "As an artist, I want every show to feel like a party. I want everyone who takes the time and money to come out to see me feel held, appreciated and ENTERTAINED!" Sidley said of her 2020 resolutions. "As a person--other than further committing myself to social and environmental justice--I’d like to smoke a little less pot and be a little less stressed." Samantha Sidley will be playing a free show at the Zebulon in Los Angeles on January 20. Visit her website, Facebook, and Instagram to stay updated on tour announcements and new releases. Words: Steven Ward Silk-Voiced Singer/Songwriter Geneva White Teases Debut EP in 2020 Los Angeles multi-instrumentalist and jazz vocalist, Geneva White revels in the intimacy that is imbued in her songwriting. A kind of soft-spoken, gently delivered tenderness that radiates from her words and sparse melodies into emotional crescendos. Anything but a stranger to the stage, White has opened for acts like the Arctic Monkeys, and has even sung back-up for Lorde. With plans to release a long EP and begin collaborations with other artists in 2020, White closed out the decade with the release of her song "FRAME," a heart-aching ballad that hones in on the singer's emotionally potent vocals. https://soundcloud.com/genevawhite/frame-1 The new decade holds a lot of promise and hope for White, not just as an artist, but as a person as well; apart from goals of being more healthy and creating a better routine for herself, she also wants to pay off a health debt incurred due to the rare autoimmune disease she possesses. White says she would like to tour (hopefully one day with Adele and / or Phoebe Bridgers) despite her health problems; "to both prove to the people who won’t take the chance on me that it’s doable, and inspire others with similar health conditions who really just need a little encouragement, like I did." "In 2020, as an artist, I’d like to put out as much music as possible, including a few side projects in different genres. It’s a dream of mine to have my music in more movies and short films. I love telling stories and I feel that the right combination of film+music can bring you to another dimension that brings you out of your own head, and to me that’s magic. I’d also like to continue writing / working with other bands I’m a fan of on their projects. I love seeing projects from start-to-finish and I feel like I see the potential in people pretty clearly. So it’s fun for me to connect others and see special projects at their inception." Visit Geneva White's Facebook and Instagram to stay updated on new releases and tour announcements. Words: Steven Ward Spare Parts for Broken Hearts Get Heavy with Plans for Full-Length Album Release in 2020 The dream of the 90's is alive in Spare Parts for Broken Hearts. Buzzing with those 90s alt rock vibes, Spare Parts for Broken Hearts come through with all the chunky riffs and melodic tones sure to spark some nostalgia (especially if you were a 90s child). This trio has busted their ass playing shows, going to shows, making music and then some! It wasn't too long ago where we forecasted Spare Parts for Broken Hearts as an honorable mention, now it's time to give them the full page because these grunge-alicous rockers are set to sail in 2020. Single after single, Spare Parts have pulled at our heartstrings while rocking us the fuck out. Songs like "Ever" waste no time grabbing your attention with fuzzed out riffs, while tracks like "Mush" soar with so much anthemic emotion -- you can almost feel singer, Sarah Green's heartache. If the sole purpose of music is supposed to make you FEEL, then Spare Parts have mastered that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?vFUhgI1mKQgU The band's most recent single "Big Win" is quite possibly their best yet. Making Grimy Goods' Best Songs of 2019, the song was played endlessly. So much that even the Spotify algorithm informed me that it was one of my most played songs of the year (right up there next to Lizzo!). Truly a beautiful song; it still gives me goosebumps each time I listen to it. The lyrics are so relatable, and once again, Green really drives those feelings to your heart. "Kind of blows my mind that moments of my own suffering are liberated through your connection to our lyrics," shared Green in a recent Instagram post where fans / friends tattooed Spare Parts' lyrics. View this post on Instagram One of the raddest things about art is that it’s permanent, I think about that every time we release a new song into the universe. We want to shout out the fans & friends who recently inked themselves w/ what speaks to them in our music. Kind of blows my mind that moments of my own suffering are liberated through your connection to our lyrics ✊🏼 A post shared by Spare Parts for Broken Hearts (@sparepartsforbrokenhearts) on Jan 5, 2020 at 11:49am PST Spare Parts for Broken Hearts are currently in the studio working on their debut full-length with producer DVNCY (LAYNE, Bebe Rexha, WRENN). The band aims to get their "new releases in the hands of as many new and already loyal fans as possible." "Our first single release of this decade is heavier both sonically and in sentiment," shares Sarah Green. "Its messaging is an urgent call for us to be, and remain connected to each other right from the start.” Spare Parts for Broken Hearts will release a new single and video this February, along with tour dates throughout the year. The trio's new album will be released sometime in the second half of 2020. For all the latest news and music from Spare Parts for Broken Hearts, follow them on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. Words: Sandra Olinger Paper Idol -- Photo by Anna Lee Paper Idol is Bringing Early 2010s Indietronica Into the New Decade Paper Idol, the brainchild of Milwaukee-born music producer Matan KG, has already made a name for himself creating the kind of indie-electronica bathed in early 2010s nostalgia. His two singles released last year, the heady-thumper "Still So Alive" and bass bumping "Feel Real Pretty," have uncovered the beginnings of a possible tastemaker in a revitalization of the genre. https://soundcloud.com/iampaperidol/feel-real-pretty-9 "Too electronic for indie fans, too indie for electronic fans," reads the Paper Idol bio on his Facebook page, but we have a feeling that his eventual debut EP or LP is going to bridge that gap quite spectacularly. With plans to release another single on February 6 , followed by a West Coast tour, Paper Idol is already off to a hot start in 2020 and ready to take his futuristic, avant-garde electronica into the new decade. Paper Idol will release a 4-song EP in March. “The EP will have hints of my earlier material, but will sound like nothing anyone's ever heard from me. I couldn't be more excited.” Paper Idol will be playing the Moroccan Lounge in Los Angeles on February 6 opening for Jane Holiday. Fawns of Love Continue to Blossom in 2020 with Tour Plans and New Music Fawns of Love have been tickling our senses all year with their illustrious shoe-gaze melodies from their latest album, Permanent. Filled with lush synths, dreamy vocals and a delightfully sublime vibe, the wife-husband duo made up of Jenny and Joseph Andreotti truly sparkled this past year. After naming Fawns of Love as an honorable mention in our 2019 Forecast, the duo is getting the shiny full page in 2020. https://www.youtube.com/watch?vCXN5jEm7I0I Songs like "Mournful Eyes" glimmer with a gorgeous melancholy, while the album's opening track "Someday" is more of an upbeat number (for shoegaze) where you might catch yourself goth-ly dancing into the night. With Permanent being an album favorite for many, Fawns of Love recently cut a special Part-Time Punks Sessions LP where the duo performed alternate versions of their Permanent tracks. This delicious version of an already dream-pop treat will be released soon. With plans for a summer tour and more new material, Fawns of Love are already setting that positive energy in motion. "We want to create more music, tour, and teach more amazing students. Music is so unpredictable and we can’t wait to see what 2020 has in store for us." Btw, how awesome is it that both Jenny and Joseph are full-time educators? They're quite the inspiring duo who we can't wait to see blossom even more in 2020. Keep up with Fawns of Love via their Instagram and Facebook, and catch the band live at Zebulon on Jan. 16, opening for Cold Showers. Words: Sandra Olinger Xoller is the Rising Queen of Dream-Pop in 2020 With the release of her debut EP Diamond In My Head released last year solidifying the ethereal crooner as a creator of incisive dream-pop, Xoller deserves a close eye this decade. Her influences range from Elvis and Sinatra to Lana Del Rey and Beach House, but her eclecticism is not just a hodge-podge of sonic touchstones. Xoller fills her turbulent soundscapes with all the dynamic passions owed to the origins of the worlds she creates within them--those origins being her own anxiety and attempts to harness that energy into something constructive. https://soundcloud.com/xollersounds/sets/diamond-in-my-head-ep There's no shortage of moments on the heavily atmospheric head-spaces of Diamond In My Head that leave you blissfully lost in the wilderness of Xoller's manifested mind, each track unraveling itself without regard for catchy-hooks or tired construction. These are songs you're meant to drift with--but by no means does that imply that they don't have a burning purposefulness to them. And the same underlying urgency that lies inside them is what propels Xoller into the new year as well. "I feel like 2020 is going to be my most productive year yet. I released an EP last year, and am currently in the studio writing another one. Maybe even a full length - when I start writing, I really go for it. I’m enjoying collaborating with some brilliant artists, and can’t wait to put out new music very soon. But my main focus will be on performing - I put together my live show last year and had so much fun playing around LA with my band, so more shows are definitely on the horizon for 2020. I come from a performance background, so onstage is where I feel most comfortable and free, and I want to expand on that more this year."
